FAQ
1. Why does porosity appear after I machine a stainless steel casting that looked fine before machining?
Porosity can exist below the original casting surface and become exposed when CNC machining removes material. This is one reason a casting can pass a basic visual inspection but fail later during machining. Real machining discussions describe porosity being discovered during finishing passes, sometimes after many hours of machining and rework. For critical components, the practical solution is to identify high-risk areas on the drawing and ask the foundry whether X-ray, penetrant testing, ultrasonic testing or another suitable NDT method should be performed before extensive machining. Do not assume that a visually clean surface proves that the internal metal is fully sound.
2. Do I really need X-ray inspection for my stainless steel casting?
Not every stainless steel casting needs X-ray inspection. The requirement depends on the consequence of an internal defect. A decorative bracket and a pressure-containing valve body do not have the same inspection risk. For critical castings, radiography can help identify internal porosity and shrinkage that cannot be reliably found through visual inspection. In an Eng-Tips discussion involving 347 stainless steel investment castings, engineers specifically discussed micro-shrinkage and porosity and confirmed that X-ray had been used to evaluate casting soundness. The better purchasing approach is to define the critical areas, defect acceptance criteria and required NDT method before production.
3. Is 316 stainless steel always better than 304 for cast parts?
No. 316 is not automatically the better choice for every application. The key difference is that 316 contains molybdenum, which generally provides better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments. If the component will contact seawater, salt spray or certain chemical media, 316 or 316L may be more appropriate. For general industrial, food-processing or indoor applications where chloride exposure is limited, 304 or another suitable grade may be sufficient and less expensive. Ask the foundry to select the grade based on the actual fluid, temperature, corrosion environment and mechanical requirements rather than simply choosing the most expensive stainless steel.
4. Can I order only a small quantity of custom stainless steel castings?
Usually, there is no single universal MOQ for stainless steel investment casting. The economical quantity depends heavily on tooling, part weight, geometry, furnace loading and secondary processing. Public supplier information shows a wide range: some investment casting suppliers accept prototype quantities of only a few pieces, while production-oriented projects may be quoted in batches of 50, 100 or several hundred pieces. For a small order, tell the foundry your expected annual demand instead of discussing only the first order quantity. A supplier may be able to structure tooling and sample costs differently when there is a clear repeat-production plan.
5. How long does a custom stainless steel casting project normally take?
There is no reliable universal lead time because tooling, shell building, material availability, casting size, heat treatment, machining and inspection can all change the schedule. Current supplier information gives examples ranging from roughly 2–4 weeks for sample development to 4–6 weeks for batch production at one vertically integrated foundry, while other suppliers quote longer periods for tooling and first-article approval. Instead of asking only "How many days?", ask for a schedule covering tooling → first casting → inspection → sample approval → machining → mass production. This makes it easier to identify where a delay is likely to occur.
